Description:
Original receipt/bill of sale with "Mr. Barnard to Paul Revere" written on the top line, and described on the bottom line as "Enclosed "Rect for Church Plate." It is signed below: "Boston Jany 2 1764 Received the above contents in full / Paul Revere." The following list is written between and dated "1764 / Jany 2": To a Silver Tankard Wt 30.8 oz at 7/ ?oz 10.12.8 / To the making 3.0.0 / To the Engraving 0.3.4 / To a Church Cup Weigh oz. 12:1:0 at 7/ 4.4.4 / To the Making & Engraving 1.4.8 / L19.5.0." Samuel Barnard (1684-1762), a survivor of the 1704 raid and later wealthy merchant in Salem, bequeathed funds for silver to three churches: "I allso give to that Church of Christ in Salem whereof I have been for some years a Member; plate to the Value of sixty pounds: I allso give to that Church in Deerfield whereof the Revd Mr. Jonathan Ashley [1712-1780] is Pastor plate to the Value of One Hundred pounds; I allso give to the Church in Greenfield Plate to the Value of Forty pounds." In 1764, his nephew and estate executor, Joseph Barnard (1717-1785) of Deerfield, the son of Samuel's brother, Ebenezer Barnard (1696-1764) of Deerfield, bought the tankard from Revere for 19 pounds 5 shillings. This tankard (HD 97.60.5) was formerly in the collection of the First Church of Deerfield and is now in the collection of Historic Deerfield; the whereabouts of the cup is unknown.
