Label Text:
In 1853, the United States re-established regular trade and discourse with Japan for the first time in 200 years. The new availability of such Japanese wares as ceramics, textiles, fans, and prints exerted a strong influence on design in the west, including American art pottery. Designs became asymmetrical or were arranged diagonally and art potters copied forms, imitated glaze effects, and incorporated Japanese images and motifs. These elements can all be seen in these two vases from Weller’s Jap Birdimal line developed by Frederick Hurten Rhead during his brief time at the pottery in 1903 and 1904.
