Description:
mottled matt glazed vase with garlands of flowers against a green background

Label Text:
Many American potteries sent their designers to Paris in the 1890s to study the art nouveau style and that influence is seen in the curving, naturalistic forms of these pieces.
The matte surface of these pots represents a significant technical advance as the potteries competed with one another to perfect a non-reflective glaze. Artus Van Briggle was at the forefront of the development of this new technique. For Van Briggle, the clay body was not a canvas for a picture and the glaze was not simply a protective coating. His aim was to integrate the clay, form, and glaze into one unified artistic creation.
