Label Text:
Guy Pène Du Bois studied with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, and was both a writer and cultural critic as well as an artist. His paintings are often ironic tableaux that lampoon the upper class, whom he portrayed in fashionable nightclubs, restaurants, and other elegant haunts. Rounded and simply rendered, Pène Du Bois's characters are anonymous automatons; suspended in motion, they convey the mystery and tension of an unfolding drama.
