Description:
Hepplewhite corner basin stand in pine that probably had been decorated originally, which descended in the Hoyt family of Deerfield and was probably owned in the Old Indian House. The design is derived from plate 83 of Hepplewhite's "Guide" and was meant for installation in the corner of the room. Cleanliness required water, and by the end of the 18th century, specialized furniture was designed to accomodate its presence in the house. The stand is fitted with openings in the top to hold a basin and soap dishes. A pitcher of water could rest on the shelf below.
