Description:
Triangular fichu or neckerchief, with the ink inscription “E. Porter” written on one corner. With a history of ownership to the family of Elisha Porter (1742-1796) of Hadley, Massachusetts, and probably made from English- or Indian-woven cotton it is an important example of a late 18th-or early 19th-century clothing accessory owned and worn in the Connecticut River Valley. Neckerchiefs or fichus were worn around their neck, often also covering a garment's neckline. Neckerchiefs were also worn by men, folded and wrapped around the shirt collar. While this example could have been worn by either sex, its inscription suggests it was worn by Elisha Porter.
