Description:
In September 1755 William Johnson (1715-1774) commanded provincial troops at the battle of Lake George during the French and Indian War. After a disasterous beginning, known as the Bloody Morning Scout, Johnson's troops repulsed an attack by the French and their Native allies to claim victory. Johnson's report of the battle exaggerated his role, a grateful Parliament made him a Baronet with a substantial cash award.
Several engravings of Johnson appeared in 1756, perhaps the most famous done by William Herbert. This engraving appeared in the August issue of the General Magazine of Arts and Sciences (London) published by WIlliam Owen.
