Description:
Fragment of crewel embroidery stitched onto a quilted wool backing. A handwritten note on the back of the piece read "Section of 18thc petticoat border from/ old hadley MA family./ crewel embroidery on linen./ Linsey-woolsey backing." (see also HD 2000.51.2). The crewel yarns are in yellow (two shades), red (three shades, incl. pink), and green. The piece is a partial segment of a continuous meandering floral design. The embroidery is done on a bleached or half bleached, plain weave linen ground fabric. The stitches used in the crewel work include a self-couching stitch (Romanian?) and a stem stitch. The fragment is mounted onto a quilted fabric, consisting of two layers and padding: The top layer is a green wool; the bottom layer is a combination white linen warp and orange wool weft fabric; and the padding is wool. The quilting stitches are in the form of four-point stars inside medallions. Good condition. Some browning/ discoloration on crewel piece. Two modern pins were removed when cataloguing this piece.
