Description:
Epaulet of metallic thread to adorn a military uniform of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Shoulder strap segment with buttonhole for fastening onto uniform. Fringe made up of wrapped metallic threads arranged in a spiral.

Label Text:
This epaulette was also part of the militia uniform of Charlemont native Lieutenant Tertius Taylor. Single epaulettes were not uncommon; only when an officer was promoted above the rank of Captain were two allowed. The strap of the epaulette was buttoned onto the shoulder of the coat, with the fringe hanging down over the top of the sleeve.
