Label Text:
This print is signed at lower middle-left "Ichijusai Yoshikazu ga" ('drawn by Ichijusai Yoshikazu'). To the right of the signature is the seal of publisher Maruya Jinpachi: the kanji "jin" within a circle; the Japanese word for circle, "maru," thus making the seal a visual abbreviation of the publisher's name. The identity of the warrior is indicated by the text at upper-left.

Asahina Saburō Yoshihide was a 13th century warrior who has since taken on many legendary characteristics, making him a perennial character in many theatrical performances and literary works. He is renowned to have had supernatural strength, enabling him to grab whole sharks with his bare hands and, most famously, allowing him to open singlehandedly the Asaina Pass, which is named for him. Little is known about the historical figure following his defeat of Minamoto no Yoriie, his retainer, though it is said that he fled, along with hundreds of horsemen, eventually reaching Korea.
