Description:
Man's one-piece wrapper or dressing gown, worn at home in informal occasions. The garment features a high, standing collar and long, full sleeves. It closes down the center front with pairs of self-covered wooden buttons and thread loops. The garment is constructed from two vibrantly-patterned, printed cottons dating to the late 1820s through the 1840s. The garment's 1840s construction probably suggests it was remade from these slightly earlier cottons. The technology used in printed cottons by the second quarter of the 19th century made bright, colorfast, and whimsical prints available to a wider audience than ever before. These kinds of printed cottons enlivened more informal garments like wrappers and dressing gowns, accessories, and gowns for women for women and children. The cotton used for the fashion fabric in this example is woven in a plain weave and printed with a solid design and alternating small circle design and floral springs. The cotton used for the lining and facings is woven in a twill weave, with blue, red, white and black. Set-in straight sleeves, self-piped armscyes. Center front closure fastens with matching pairs of (wood-covered?) buttons and a corresponding loop. Overall good condition, with several areas of loss.
