Label Text:
Women played a formative role in the development of American art pottery. The Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati was founded by Maria Longworth in 1880 and employed many women as artists and glaze technicians. Newcomb College, a women’s college in New Orleans, established the Newcomb Pottery to teach young women ceramic design, decoration and glazing, giving them skills that would allow them to find employment.
