Description:
Cries of London print depicting a used clothing seller peddling second-hand cloaks, suits, coats, and swords. the second hand clothing trade was an important source of clothing for many middling and lower economic groups in 18th-century England, Europe, and the American colonies. Used clothing in the American colonies tended to be sold by vendue (public auction) or else through pawn brokers, who performed the same function with respect to clothing as the archetype seller depicted in this print. Such sellers could also be known as frippieres in France. The print was published by Pierce Tempest, in London. The Cries of London print series...depicts persons of different social stations in London and their dress and common accessories...
