Label Text:
This print is signed at middle upper-left "Hirosada," within the wooden mallet. The actor's role is indicated by the text at upper-right, which reads "Heiemon," a character from the "Kanadehon Chūshingura," known in English as "The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers," a perenially popular subject in Japanese theatre and art. At lower-left is inscribed the kanji for "three," the serial number and location of the print within the triptych, as Japanese text is traditionally read from right to left.

The identitfy of the actor and the date of the play have been determined based on theatre records and on comparison with another impression in the Waseda University Theatre Museum, Tokyo (acc. no. 016-0467).
