Label Text:
Tsukishima was one of the first artificial islands to be constructed in Tokyo Bay. Begun in 1892, it was eventually joined with Tsukudajima, the small island fishing community at the mouth of the Sumida River. In the 1930s, this was one of the most industrialized areas of the city and housed steel mills and factories. Fujimori contrasts the new urban landscape with a single powerboat under the watchful eye of a figure observing the sunset from the shore.
