SKINNER CATALOGUE: A square butter churn in pine, factory made, painted blue, with a horizontal handle operating a vertical, slatted dasher.
Stencilled YOUNG AMERICA - B. WRIGHT'S - IMPROVED DASH-CHURN - CARDIFF, N. Y. - Pat'd. May 31, 1864 - ATMOSPHERIC. The statement in the patent reprint, no. 42984, issued to Baxter Wright, reads: "This invention consists in constructing the dash with a series of swinging blades fitting in a frame and arranged in such a manner that they will spread outward at their lower parts as the dash is forced down and the cream be compressed between the narrow spaces at the top of the blades, the latter assuming a vertical position as the dash is drawn upward, whereby the cream is agitated and operated upon in such a manner as to cause the butter to be produced in a short period of time, and with a moderate expenditure of power, and the butter, when produced, gathered very expeditiously." With the churn was the label: "Property of the Harwood family, which lived two miles east of North Brookfield on the Spencer Road. The family settled there before the Revolutionary War and the place was sold out of the family in 1920." Presented by Mrs. Alfred C. Stoddard of North Brookfield, Massachusetts. Height 18 1/2".
