Label Text:
“The Yoruba word for the ‘head’ is ori, a word which also means ‘personal destiny’. Thus, when Yoruba men and women present themselves to the photographer’s camera, they do so with a composure and a visual directness that created a photographic image that has many of the characteristics of Yoruba figure sculpture.”
John Pemberton III, “Images of West Africa”, 1988
