Label Text:
Excerpt from wall label, for the exhibition “The Unexpected Encounters of Looking Again,” November 28 - March 15, 2007:
Aycock’s “signature” style is large-scale public sculpture. Materials have played a key role in her work, specifically galvanized steel, wood, glass piping and wire. Aycock encourages not only psychological, but physical interaction with her work. In A Shanty Town…, Aycock uses the medium of drawing to explore her interests in architectural structures. She departs from the physicality of the relationship of materials and turns to pencil and vellum. The materials allow for a subtlety and an intimacy between the work of art and the viewer. Additionally, through the use of a different style, Aycock opens up another vista for the viewer. Rather than being physically enveloped by a large sculptural work, the viewer can engage with the work on a more intimate level. - by Rebecca Karp (M.A. '08)
