Description:
ca. late 19th or early 20th century plaster cast of a marble original dating to the Classical Period, ca. 340 BCE. Traditionally attributed to Praxiteles, there is now much scholarly disagreement over whether this sculpture, found in the Temple of Hera at Olympia in 1877, is a Praxitelean original or a later imitation. Hermes, partial right arm outstretched, holds the infant Dionysos, swaddled in a blanket. The original sculpture after which this cast is made is located at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia in Olympia, Greece.
