Description:
"Compendium of the Bible by Rodolphus Dickinson, Esq., Greenfield, Mass. Published by the Compiler. Roderick M. Colton, Printer 1815." There are two inscriptions: "A present from Clorinda Barnard to her respected Mother Elizabeth Barnard", and "Eunice Barnard 1825." Salah Barnard (1725-1795) of Deerfield, son of Ebenezer Barnard, married Elizabeth Nims (1745-1827), daughter of Jeremiah Nims of Deerfield, in 1765; they had ten children, including Eunice (b.1774) who married Henry Barnard (b. 1777) in 1799; and Lemuel (1785-1875) who married Clarinda Taylor (1790-1824), daughter of Othniel Taylor (1753-1819) of Canandaigua, NY. An 1805 Harvard graduate, Rodolphus Dickinson (1786-1862) of Deerfield enjoyed careers as both a lawyer and minister, but scholarship and civic involvement were his real loves. His "Compendium of the Bible" published in Deerfield in six editions between 1814 and 1817 was a kind of theological reader designed for ready use and inspiration at a time when the Bible was the most commonly owned book at home, where it served as a constant reference for model behavior.
