"A Compendium of the Bible: With a Separate Moral Selection from the Apochryphal" by Rodolphus Dickinson (1786-1862), 2nd edition, published at the Compiler's office, Graves and Wells. The book is inscribed "Noah Wells Book Shelburne an ancestor of Mary P. Wells Smith." An 1805 Harvard graduate, Rodolphus Dickinson of Deerfield enjoyed careers as both a lawyer and minister, but scholarship and civic involvement were his real loves. His "Compendium of the Bible" published in Deerfield in six editions between 1814 and 1817 was a kind of theological reader designed for ready use and inspiration at a time when the Bible was the most commonly owned book at home, where it served as a constant reference for model behavior.
