Description:
English white salt-glazed stoneware, press-molded plate with Chinese rail/basket pattern border. The decorator of this plate has made extensive use of gilding, a rare form of ornamentation in the Staffordshire potteries. The rim is embellished with gilt decoration, and the well features a repeating border of gilt scrolls encircling a central motif. The gilt decoration on this plate relates closely to another white salt-glazed stoneware plate in Historic Deerfield's collection, which features a King of Prussia pattern border (accession number: 64.099). This white salt-glazed stoneware molded border was found at the Charles Magill House archaeological site in Middletown, CT, by the Archaeology Department of Wesleyan University.
