Description: Silver case with lancets, case has a rectangular shape, with a lid with a hinge on one side, and friction mount on the other, the top of the lid is decorated with rococo style chased scrollwork, engraved on the side of the case “Presented to George Hamilton Esq. MD/ by the/ FALKIRK SCHOOL OF ARTS/ is a well merited/present?of esteem & gratitude/ FOR HIS COURSE/of Physiological Lectures/for the Above Institution....ENLIGHTENED/and his exertions to/HIS FAMILY ... FALKIRK, 5th May 1835", there are stamped hallmarks on the base of the case, "sovereign head" "thistle", "JN", "three turrets" and "Gothic letter B", made by James Nasmyth (w. 1833-1839), box maker of Edinburgh, Scotland, dated 1835. Within are four thumb lancets composed of tortoiseshell covers and steel, one lancet stamped "Crown/EVANS/LONDON" one without any markings, one is stamped "crown/ SM & Co" and one is stamped "STILE" or "STILL", and engraved "Gilchrist" on the tortoisshell. There appear to be other names scratched onto the other lancet interiors too which are illegible. The lancets are likely not original to the silver case.
