Wall map on rollers showing the location of towns, roads, railroads and canals. Elevations at selected locations given. Based on maps produced during the 1830s, many of which were lithographed by Pendleton & Co., by order of the state legislature. A later edition of this map was published by Henry Walling in 1861. Includes inset map: Geological map of Massachusetts made by order of the legislature by Edward Hitchcock; a table of the latitude and longitude of lighthouses in Massashusetts; and a statistical table of Massachusetts towns listing date founded and population from federal censuses of 1790-1840. The map's base line was measured from South Deerfield to Hatfield, using the respective Congregational churches as termini. Map engraved by George C. Smith; published and sold by C. Hickling, Boston. Every town in Massachusetts was required to provide details of its roads, boundaries, and other features for this map. Massachusetts was the first state to have trignometrical survey, taking 1831 to 1844 to complete. It was done accurately by measuring a baseline, and then connecting the baseline to various points through the state by a series of carefully measured triangles.
