Label Text:
Staged to replicate a scene Doisneau had viewed previously but was unable to capture on film, this photograph has become one of the most recognized and reproduced images in the world. In his photographs, Doisneau wished to capture the type of moment often under-appreciated in the speed of post-World War II society. Many of his photographs feature the juxtaposition of emotional expressions with the monumental architecture of Paris. In this photograph, Doisneau places a couple's passionate embrace between two typically Parisian institutions: the sidewalk café and the imposing City Hall. The result is an iconic image of Paris as a city of lovers.
