Label Text:
Marcantonio Raimondi is chiefly known as Raphael’s reproductive printmaker. His plagiarism, however, earned him an infamous reputation that has carried forward through the present day. Dürer, after viewing Raimondi’s copies – which he had engraved without permission -- after his own "Life of the Virgin" series, initiated a lawsuit, which ultimately banned Raimondi from using the master’s monogram. Unlike Goltzius’s later reinterpretation of Dürer’s print in his "Circumcision," Raimondi’s contemporary version of Dürer’s series was a relatively crude, mechanical reproduction. In comparison with Dürer’s "Birth of the Virgin" from his "Life of the Virgin" series, also on this wall, Raimondi’s angular approach to drapery lacks the energetic verve of Dürer’s rounded forms, and his even approach to hatching, be it solid architecture or complex folds of drapery, results in a uniform tonality without the increasing receding darkness seen in Dürer’s architectural interior.
