Description:
Family register of the Howland family of West Brookfield, Massachusetts, done in silk floss on a plain linen background in cross stitch and a row of Queen's stitch in pink and greens with black lettering and outline, and a four-edge borders of groups of four diamond shapes. The register is stitched with: "Family Register Made in AD 1816 / Southward Howland born March 29th 1775 / Esther Allen born December 18th AD 1780 / They were married November 24th AD 1799 / Names of their Children / Southworth Howland born Septbr 11th 1800 / Maria born August 22nd AD 1802 / Harriet born July 6th AD 1804 / Harriet born March 18th 6th AD 1806 / Louisa born March 26th AD 1808 / Henry Jenkins born October 26th 1810 / Harrison Otis born Jan 25th AD 1813" over a band of flowers; over "Harriet 1st died April 9th AD 1805 / Mrs Esther Howland died Octbr 12th 1814 / May the names be recorded here / In the Lambs Book of Life appear." The son of Job and Hannah Jenking Howland of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Southworth Howland (1775-1853) married his first wife, Esther Allen (1780-1814), the daughter of Nathan and Persis Allen of West Brookfield, in 1799. This sampler was made by one of his three daughter, Maria, Harriet (b.1806), or Louisa (1808-1877). Southworth married his second wife Polly Ware (1785-1870), the daughter of Dr. Samuel and Bertha Avery Ware of Conway, Massachusetts, in 1816, and they had five children. The family register was purchased by the donor from William W. Howland through his guardian, Rev. C.S. Wilder of Longmeadow in 1926, a year after they had also bought the sampler, portraits of Southworth and Polly Ware Howland (see HD 78.042-78.043), and other Howland family possessions found in an attic in Conway, Massachusetts. 6/7/05: sampler was incorrectly numbered HD F.864 (acc. # for curtains).
