Oil on wood portrait of Polly Ware Howland (1785-1870), one of pair with her husband Southworth Howland (HD 78.043) who married in 1816. Old Sturbridge Village has a portrait of Southward Allen Howland (1800-1882), the son of Southward Allen and his first wife, Esther Allen Howland (1780-1814), who married in 1799 and had seven children. Southworth and Polly had five children. The portraits were purchased by the donor from William W. Howland through his guardian, Rev. C.S. Wilder of Longmeadow in 1926, a year after they had also bought the portraits and other Howland family possessions found in an attic in Conway, Massachusetts. Southward Howland's possesions had been moved from Worcester where he had lived since 1843 to Conway shortly after his death in 1853. The grey-painted back has taped to the back some Howland family records of births and marriages. The bust-length portrait depicts a three-quarter profile of a woman in her early 50's with reddish-brown hair with her head facing slightly to the left and looking directly at the viewer, wearing sheer white cap tied under the neck wioth a colored bow and a black dress.
