Description: Numerous maps of Massachusetts towns were published in the 1830s as a consequence of the state ordering each town in the Commonwealth to produce a survey for the purpose of compiling a new map of Massachusetts proper. Hales' map of the town of Northampton, including part of Easthampton, is based on is surveys done in January 1831. He had it lithographed in Boston by Pendleton's, one of that city's chief printing firms. The map depicts boundaries, the road network, topography (areas such as woods and meadows indicated by symbol), and man-made features such as mills, bridges, schools, and churches. In addition to many local placenames, early land divisions are indicated, as are houses with owner's names. The map was a direct result of the General Court's unfunded 1830 mandate. Those maps, with additional surveys, were eventually compiled into the 1844 state map [see HD 2010.19] John Hales did at least a dozen Massachusetts town maps during the early 1830s, with the lithography done by Pendleton's.
