Label Text:
With "Autumn Impression," one sees Kandinskij progressing towards the fully abstracted style that he would achieve a few years later. The painting illustrates his vision of the Bavarian town of Murnau where he lived between 1907 and 1914. The church at its center is surrounded by varied shapes which suggest trees and other natural forms. Together, these forms move in a rhythmic pattern across the center of the canvas, locked between the mountain range in the distance and the meadow in the foreground.

Influenced by the modern French avant-garde and the folk art of his native Russia, Kandinskij was concerned with exploring color's connection to sound a music.
