The successful classical landscape painter Sarazin de Belmont, a student of Pierre-Henri Valenciennes, painted several scenes from Le Sage’s Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane. Here, the roguish hero, accompanied by his traveling companion, encounters his adopted father who will direct him to the castle in which his real father resides.
