This lively seascape by Randall Davey shows the harbor at Monhegan, an island off the coast of Maine. Davey was introduced to this remote, rugged locale by his New York City mentor Robert Henri, who encouraged his students to seek it out for artistic inspiration and revitalization. Winslow Homer’s iconic views of Prout’s Neck must have further stoked Davey’s interest in the Maine coast. Here, following Henri’s advice, Davey painted quickly and directly, so that Monhegan Harbor effectively conveys breezy conditions, salty air, and choppy water. But by 1915, as this canvas reveals, Davey had expanded his dark, tonal palette (typical of Henri and his followers), partly in response to the so-called Armory Show of 1913, which had showcased unprecedented examples of European modernism.
