This is a throwing up and catching game whose most famous exponents were Henri III (1551-1589) of France and Jane Austen. Children played with it in ancient Greece; and Captain Cook found it on the Sandwich Islands during his voyage to Australia. Popluar throughout the 19th century, it was first mentioned in 1826 in America and Mexico.
