Description:
Fragments of an embroidered and quilted Indian cotton textile that feature scrolling floral sprays. Pieces of this textile were used to cover six chair seats (HD 1190.1-.6), a stool seat (HD 53.032), and a quilt (HD 1064.1) for a doll's bed (HD 3082). The description that came with the coverlet reads: "This quilt was worked and given by Harriet, Countess of Orrery to Mrs. Martha Taylor from whom it descended to Mrs. Wood of Tingly House near Wakefield her grandniece who gave it in 1818 to Wm. Bateman." There is a Henrietta Hamilton, the Countess of Orrery (d.1732), who married John Boyle, Earl of Cork And Orrery (1707-1762), in 1728; her portrait is in London's National Portrait Gallery. Despite the note, it is likely this textile was embroidered in India, and possibly quilted in England.
