Description:
Umbrella or parasol with a green silk top trimmed in white and turned ivory handle, which belonged to Asa Stebbins (1767-1844) of Deerfield, Mass. A fair complexion, umblemished by labor or the harshness of the outdoors, was a sure sign of refinement. Umbrellas warded off the effects of the sun or a light shower; but, more importantly, like a cane, they might be used by a man or woman to gesture or to create affectation.
