Description:
Militia sword with a gilt brass helmet-shaped pommel, ribbed ivory grip, engraved gilt brass quillons with two acorn finials (one ending with a ring), and long tapered steel blade. According to family tradition, the sword belonged to Asa Stebbins (1767-1844) who was a colonel in the militia and active in civil affairs, including serving as a Deerfield selectman for 14 yrs. Historic arms dealer and author William Guthman described this as a circa 1840 militia sword. The quillon form appears to have been taken from a style made popular by Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769–1852), the Mameluke hilt, which was officially adopted for British General Officers in 1831.
