Description:
Adze that belonged to Mr. Wells, the father of the wife of one of the donors, Kenneth Williams, who lived in Deerfield.

Label Text:
Branches: An axe was more suited for use on perpendicular surfaces, while the orientation of an adze’s cutting edge made working horizontal surfaces easier. This flat-edged adze was used in timber frame construction to trim off high spots and level surfaces on hand-hewn timbers to be overlaid with roof boards and floorboards. Leveling was typically done after the building was framed. This adze belonged to Deerfield resident Henry C. Wells (1862-1957).
