Description:
Bow-back Windsor side chair in hickory, maple and pine painted brown and yellow over an older black and gold. The chair is marked: "Caroline Sheldon's chair. B. 1789 M. 1810" and also has a label under the seat: "Seth Sheldon/ Born Aug. 7, 1787, d. Apr. 2, 1860/Caroline Stebbins/B. Apr. 4, 1789 d. Dec 1, 1865/Married Mch. 10 - 1810." In 1810, Caroline Stebbins married Seth Sheldon, a Deerfield farmer and selectman, and their son was George Sheldon, Deerfield's historian. George Sheldon donated a chair to PVMA, listed in the Council Room as "54. Chair of Caroline Sheldon, mother of the donor." The chair has a bowed crest rail with two incised grooves surrounding seven spindles, a carved solid seat, and yellow accents on the bamboo-turned stretchers and legs.
