Description:
Small piece of linen with what may be a blood stain, which according to tradition was taken from one of the deceased of the 1704 Raid on Deerfield and may have descended in the family of Amos P. Cummings of Quebec. Amos gave it to his son-in-law, a Dr. Goodman of St. Catherine's, Quebec, who gave it his father-in-law, C.B. Cross, who gave it to someone in Windsor, VT, who gave it to the Rt. Rev. John Williams of Middletown, CT., all according to accompanying fragmentary correspondence dating to 1887-1888. "Rev. John Williams" is apparently Bishop John Williams (1817-1899), son of Ephraim Williams (1760-1835) of Deerfield, who became a president of Trinity College in Hartford, fourth bishop of Connecticut, and 54th in succession in the American episcopate. HD also has a side chair (HD 59.174), high chest of drawers (HD 82.170), and desk (HD 2003.44) which came from the Bishop.
