Description:
Fruitwood yankee style plow plane with maker's imprint of "H.L. [Holloway Long] HART" on the toe. Heavy, round chamfers turn out. Cleaned and oiled. Original parts, but wedge shortened. Thomas L. Elliott writes in his Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes (5th edition) that, "Holloway Long Hart (b. Oct. 4, 1804 in Shelburne, MA, d. June 12, 1870 in Deerfield, MA) [was] listed in 1840-70 censuses in Greenfield, MA. Listed variously as cutlery, knife factory, tool cutter or mechanic. Possibly he was a joiner or carpenter prior to his listing in 1840."
