Description:
Ogee plane with filet bearing the maker's mark of "A.W. [Abiah Wadsworth] MAYHEW" on the toe. The body is made of beech and the wedge is made of birch. Medium/narrow, flat chamfers. Stops step and turn out. Small hang hole top, rear. Original parts. Uncleaned or oiled. Worm damage to bottom, front. No owners mark. The wedge relief is simliar to those found on planes made in several north and central Massachusetts towns, including Deerfield, New Salem, Greenwich, and Rutland, MA. Born in Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard, MA, on September 14, 1774, Abiah Wadsworth Mayhew was living with his family in the the western Massachusetts towns of Williamsburg and Conway by 1777. Between 1789 and 1792 he was living in Deerfield, MA. He later moved to upstate New York, where he lived in Spencertown, Hillsdale, and Austerlitz.
