Description:
All beech, sash coping plane with maker's imprint of "T. [Timothy] Billings" on the toe. Flat chamfers. Stops with faint steps and turnouts. Embossed zig zag "L*B" initial twice on toe. Removeable right side-guide likely added. Possibly uncleaned. Original parts. The wedge relief is simliar to those found on planes made in several north and central Massachusetts towns, including Deerfield, New Salem, Greenwich, and Rutland, MA. Thomas L. Elliott writes in his Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes (5th edition) that, "Timothy Billings (b. Aug. 16, 1770 in Canton, Franklin Co., MA, d. Jul. 7, 1860 in Deerfield, Franklin Co.) was a housewright and furniture maker in Greenfield and Deerfield, MA. He moved to Deerfield, at age 16, and was apprenticed to Capt. Hopkins King of Northfield."
