Description:
All beech, fixed, ovolo sash plane with maker's imprint of "T. [Timothy] Billings" on the toe. Heavy, round chamfers. Chamfer stops with faint steps and turn outs. Embossed, zig zag "L*B" initials once on toe. Steel plate probably added to fence. Cleaned and oiled. Original parts. The wedge relief is simliar to those found on several planes made in north and central Massachusetts towns, including Deerfield, New Salem, Greenwich, and Rutland, MA. Thomas L. Elliott writes in his Guide to the Makers of American Wooden Planes (5th edition) that, "Timothy Billings (b. Aug. 16, 1770 in Canton, Franklin Co., MA, d. Jul. 7, 1860 in Deerfield, Franklin Co.) was a housewright and furniture maker in Greenfield and Deerfield, MA. He moved to Deerfield, at age 16, and was apprenticed to Capt. Hopkins King of Northfield."
