Description:
Silver bow-type sugar tongs marked "J.S" in a rectangle for John Staniford (1737-1811), with engraved the initials "JCK" in a bright-cut medallion on the center bow. The tongs, which were used to pick up white sugar chunks from a sugar bowl, have a U-shaped form with bow back with swag punches on the bow end following the perimeter in an oval shape; flat tapered arms at right angles; and hammered scallop shell-shaped grips. Historic Deerfield has a set of tools (HD 57.251) belonging to John Staniford, which includes a rare punch mark for making initials on silver and his maker's mark.
