Description:
Katherine Yale Fuller Arms (1891-1985), daughter of George Spencer Fuller and Mary Williams Field Fuller, was born in Deerfield on January 12, 1891. Like many members of the Fuller family, she inherited artistic talent. Katharine attended Miss Amy Sacker’s School of Design and Interior Decoration and Miss Hardy’s Workshop for Painted Decoration, both Boston-based schools. Katharine worked in Boston for a couple of years, decorating trays, and restoring antique furniture. Returning to Deerfield in 1914, Katharine opened a shop in a corn barn behind the 1761 John Partridge Bull House that her mother had inherited. There she taught tray painting and chair painting and became a member of the Society of Deerfield Industries. Affected by World War I, Katharine pursued a degree in nursing, and worked as a nurse until marrying Richard P. Arms in 1927. Throughout most of the 20th century, Katharine Arms continued to make decorated works. Arms exhibited her tinware and furniture at the Indian House Memorial in 1936. From 1939 to 1941 she served as Vice President of Deerfield Industries and was a charter member of the Deerfield Valley Art Association. She died in Deerfield in 1985, after a long life and artistic career. Rectangular wooden shop sign, painted with a greyish-white ground and thin black border, at the top of sign is a basket of colorful flowers, and below is the inscription, "DECORATED/ TRAYS/BOXES/BOOKENDS/FURNITURE."
