Description:
Pencil sketch of the kitchen in the Manse or Joseph Barnard House in Deerfield (what is now the Head of School's residence for Deerfield Academy). The sketch depicts a round, cabriole leg table in the foreground, in the center is an open hearth with many implements for open hearth cooking - including three hanging pots and a kick toaster, in front is a fireplace fender, alongside the hearth is a gun, above the hearth on the mantle are a variety of objects: candlesticks, jugs, coffeepots, and bottles, a large central dish hangs in the above the fireplace. Inscribed in the lower left hand corner "KITCHEN MANTEL / The Manse / Olde Deerfield Mass. / 1768" Initialed in the lower right near the fireplace: "CR [or RC] '32" A note in pencil on the reverse from previous owner J. Peter Spang reads: "Identified on front. The arched door was removed by contractor Wm Gass and is presently in Dwight House, 1st floor back hallway of front structure opposite toilet room. Done in 1954 JPS Sketch probably 1931. See symbol lower right.
