Description: Suit jacket worn by Helen Geier Flynt (1895-1986), featuring a turned down collar, turned back cuffs, fitted waistline, curved peplum, and slouchy, padded hip pockets. A label on the inside back neckline is marked “Frederick’s / Importers.” This jacket would have been worn with a matching skirt. By the middle of the 20th century, skirted suits were an intergral clothing form for professional women from all walks of life. Helen Geier Flynt, who with her husband Henry Needham Flynt (1894-1970) founded Historic Deerfield, frequently wore suits when she was engaged with work at the museum. Frederick's was a women's specialty clothing store in business during the 20th century, with branches in both Spring Lake and Montclair, New Jersey. Helen Geier Flynt often patroned the Sprign Lake location. The business sold higher end ready-made and custom womenswear for many occasions, including day and evening. The Spring Lake branch had a fitting area for alterations, and possibly new creations were made there as well. The label on this garment reveals that the firm also at one time imported fashions, probably French, from abroad.
