Description:
Richard Wilby and Gordon Johnston ran the Turnip Yard in Deerfield from around 1946-1952, making a line of aluminum and ceramic wares including jam pots and cassseroles. Although the first ceramic pieces were made in Deerfield, high costs led them to source the stoneware from outside Boston. Wilby sold his share of the company to Johnston in 1952. The Museum has casserole, marmalade jars, and small vessels with aluminum covers and/or under plates, enameled copper ash trays and bowls by Turnip Yard. Square copper ashtray with bent corners, enameled on the top surface in purple, yellow, and green, stamped on bottom with "Turnip Yard Deerfield Mass". Condition: all four corners are chipped.
