Description:
Illuminated quotation by Clara Alquist of a verse from poet Robert Browning's 1841 poem "Pippa Passes." The verse reads:
The year's at the spring
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hill-side's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn:
God's in his heaven—
All's right with the world!
Pasted and nailed to the back of the frame is a handwritten label inscribed "Clara Alquist / Deerfield/ $35." Clara Alquist Sherman (1876-1944) and her husband, Ernest Sherman, arrived in Deerfield in 1921 and established the Acanthus Studio on Albany Road. Alquist specialized in painted landscapes in watercolors and oils, coats of arms, and illuminated verse. She was a member of the Society of Deerfield Industries, exhibiting with the Society until 1941, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, and the Deerfield Valley Arts Association. During the Great Depression Alquist found additional employment with the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
