Description:
Woman's three piece suit consiting of bodice, skirt, and coat, made of purple wool and trimmed with black silk tape. The bodice closes in the center-front using hooks attached to the faux waistcoat. The waistcoat is made from a white fabric and embroidered with a geometric floral design. The outer edges of the waistcoat are trimmed with small, black and white glass beads. Each sleeve is gathered at the shoulder and again at the wrist. The entire bodice is lined with navy silk. The skirt fastens in the center back. On either side of the closure are vertical pleats. Two rows of black silk trim run around the entire skirt and are woven into three crosshatch patterns that decorate the front of the skirt. The overcoat is made from the same fabric as the rest of the suit and is lined with light brown silk. The coat fastens in the center-front, below the notched lapel, using a button closure. The sleeves are gathered at the shoulders and end in a notched, upturned cuff. There are two pockets on either side of the coat that can be buttoned closed. Two vertical slits in the back of the coat would have allowed it to fit easily over the skirt. This suit descended in the Bridges family of South Deerfield.
The coat is missing three of its five front buttons. The buttons on both pockets are missing as well. The outer, wool fabric has deteriorated in several places, including the front left of the coat next to the button closure and the front right near the pocket. The bead trim on the faux waistcoat has become detached in several places. Two of the hooks have also become partly detached. There is some fabric loss on the right sleeve.
